Nikon announced the test results/compatibility of their software packages with the latest Mac OS X version 10.11 (El Capitan):
Compatibility testing continues for Mac OS X El Capitan. The Office of Information Technology is testing the new Mac OS X El Capitan and its compatibility with all other software. El Capitan was released by Apple on Sept. Do not upgrade your Mac OS without contacting OIT for assistance. If your Mac is using an earlier version of any Mac operating system, you should install the latest Apple software updates, which can include important security updates and updates for the apps that are installed by macOS, such as Safari, Books, Messages, Mail, Music, Calendar, and Photos.
New installation of the following software applications under OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” is not possible. The results indicated below are based on testing when applications were installed under a version of OS X prior to OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” and OS X was then upgraded to OS X 10.11 “El Capitan”.
As some applications cannot be used, please consider upgrading to OS X 10.11 “El Capitan” carefully until we are able to release compatible versions.

Safari downloads the following older installers as a disk image named InstallOS.dmg or InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the disk image. It installs an app named Install [Version Name]. Open that app from your Applications folder to begin installing the operating system.
